(John) Maurice Lindsay, also known as Gavin Brock, was born 21 July 1918 in Glasgow. He was educated at Glasgow Academy, 1926-36, then attended the Scottish National Academy of Music (now called the Royal Scottish Academy of Music) in Glasgow, 1936-39. During the war he served in the army, becoming a Captain. Between 1946 and 1947 he was drama critic for the Scottish Daily Mail in Edinburgh, and music critic for Bulletin in Glasgow, 1946-60. C. M. (Christopher Murray) Grieve [Hugh McDiarmid, 1892-1978] was a Scottish poet, writer, and cultural activist. Politically, he was both a nationalist, helping found the National Party of Scotland in 1928, and a communist. During the 1930's, he was expelled from each group for his membership in the other.
